Brand mention
A brand mention names a company in editorial content, with or without a link. Why mentions increasingly outweigh backlinks for AI visibility.

A brand mention is a reference to a company or product inside editorial content. It may carry a link, but it does not have to. For readers it works as a recommendation in context, and for machines it works as evidence that the brand exists and is associated with a topic.
Why mentions gained weight
Search engines and language models build a picture of an entity from how often and in what context it is named across the web. A link tells a system where to go. A mention tells it what something is. As AI answers replace lists of links, the second question matters more than the first.
The number behind it
According to an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (2025), brand mentions correlate roughly three times more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks. That does not make links irrelevant, and the study shows correlation rather than a proven mechanism. But it does explain why a mention without a link is no longer a wasted placement.
What makes a mention useful
Context. Being named in an article about your category is worth more than being listed in a directory. The publication needs real readers, and the sentence around your name has to say something a model could reuse.
The honest limitation
A single mention changes nothing measurable. Mentions work cumulatively, and the effect is slow and hard to attribute to one placement.
