AI visibility describes how present a brand is in the answers produced by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and Gemini. It is measured by whether a brand is named or cited when someone asks a question in its category, not by a ranking position.
Why it is not the same as rankings
A classic result page shows ten links and the user chooses. An AI answer names one or two options and the rest are invisible. That changes the shape of the competition: there is no page two to be on, and being the eleventh best source means being absent rather than being slightly behind.
What drives it
Presence in the sources a model draws from. That means editorial mentions, entries in places the model treats as reference material, and pages that state facts in a form that can be quoted without surrounding context. According to an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (2025), brand mentions correlate roughly three times more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks.
How to measure it
By asking the systems directly and recording what they answer for the questions your buyers ask. Tools now track this at scale, and the Linkbroker dashboard shows mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini alongside rankings and placements.
The honest limitation
The mechanics are not public and change without notice. Measurements are snapshots, and two runs of the same question can differ. Treat the trend as the signal, not the single answer.
