Answer engine optimization (AEO)
AEO is optimising to be the answer rather than a result. How it differs from classic SEO and what actually makes content quotable.

Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of preparing content to be used as the answer to a question rather than as one result among ten. It applies to featured snippets, voice assistants, and increasingly to AI systems that reply in prose instead of links.
How it differs from classic SEO
Classic SEO optimises a page to be chosen from a list. AEO optimises a passage to be lifted out of the page and reused. That changes what good looks like: short, self-contained statements beat long build-ups, and a paragraph that only makes sense in context is unusable no matter how well the page ranks.
What makes a passage quotable
It answers the question in the first two sentences. It works when removed from the page, without depending on the heading above it or the paragraph before it. It contains something specific, a number, a date, a threshold. And it does not hedge, because a sentence full of qualifications cannot be quoted cleanly.
How it relates to LLM SEO and GEO
The terms overlap. AEO is the older one and focuses on answer formats generally. GEO and LLM SEO describe the same goal for generative systems specifically. In practice the work is the same.
The honest limitation
Being quoted is not the same as being visited. An answer engine that uses your text may never send the reader to you. The gain is presence and authority, not traffic, and anyone promising otherwise is selling.
