A referring domain is a single website that links to yours, regardless of how many individual links it sends. If one site links to you forty times, that is forty backlinks and one referring domain. Search engines weight the second number far more heavily.

Why the distinction matters

A recommendation repeated by the same source does not become more credible. Fifty links from one website carry roughly the weight of one endorsement, while five links from five different websites carry five. This is why backlink counts in the thousands often mean much less than they appear to.

How to read the ratio

Divide backlinks by referring domains. A ratio close to one is normal for a young site. A very high ratio usually means sitewide links, footer links, or blogroll placements, all of which are heavily discounted. Competitor profiles with impressive link totals frequently collapse when you look at the domain count instead.

What that means when buying

Spreading placements across different publishers beats concentrating them on one, even when the same publisher offers a discount for volume. The second placement on the same domain is worth noticeably less than the first, and the fifth is worth very little.

The honest limitation

More domains is not automatically better. Thirty weak domains lose against three strong ones with real readers. The domain count only says something once quality is held constant.
